For the Second Time, Nassau Republican Machine Bars Republican Candidate Frank Scaturro from a Republican Meeting—This Time, in Wantagh

Wantagh, NY – Last week, Donald X. Clavin, Jr., the Republican Executive Leader for Garden City and Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes, barred Republican congressional candidate Frank Scaturro from attending the March meeting of the Garden City Republican Club.

Today, the campaign reached out to Frederick E. Parola, Republican Executive Leader of Wantagh, to give advance notice of Scaturro’s desire to attend the monthly meeting of that club at the Jones Beach Hotel this evening.

Parola’s response was telling. He said Scaturro “is totally not welcome. He said he would support the party nominee the last time and he didn’t. And now we’re going to kick his ass.”

Parola is the former Nassau County Comptroller and current Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Hempstead Industrial Development Agency.

The “last time” was a reference to the 2012 campaign, in which Scaturro faced off against machine candidate Francis X. Becker.  Two years ago, Parola ejected Scaturro from the Wantagh club meeting on June 21, 2012, while Parola was handing out Becker flyers which fraudulently identified Scaturro, a lifelong Republican, as a Democrat.

Parola was incorrect about Scaturro’s post-primary support for Becker in the 2012 general election—but in any event, the Nassau GOP chairman, Joseph Mondello, was uninterested in defeating Democrat Carolyn McCarthy, and did not seek Scaturro’s support for Becker in 2012.

Remarking on the events of the last week, Scaturro said, “Republican voters have the right to pick their nominee, and it is disgusting how far party bosses go to impede the candidacy of anyone not beholden to them. Such conduct shows contempt for the democratic process, not to mention the truth. If our leaders put a higher premium on intimidation than on the open exchange of ideas, our democracy is in trouble.”

Although barred from tonight’s Republican Club meeting, Scaturro is spending the evening greeting Wantagh residents at their homes.
